Maximizing our trips is always something Richard and I try to accomplish when we travel, so going from London to Brussels (which is about 2 hour by train) was definitely at the top of our agenda. The journey to Brussels was aboard the Eurostar train. We picked an early train in order to maximize our day in Brussels, but unfortunately for Richard and I, we forgot the fine print which included getting to the St. Pancras international railway station at least 1 hour ahead of our departure time. So after enjoying a so-so breakfast at the St Pancras Hotel, we missed our train! I’d say it was worth it if we had a fantastic breakfast but we didn’t. Anyway, we had to pay an additional fee and wait another 3 hours for the next train out to Brussels.
We made use of our time and picked up snacks and window-shopped in the railway station. We were too paranoid now to even leave the train depot and accidentally miss another train, so we stayed put! Finally, the three hours had passed and we were on our way. The train ride was smooth and peaceful. I attempted to take a little nap in between stops and there weren’t many. With little time left we arrived in Brussels!
We managed to get on the underground train and find our way to the hop on hop off bus to start some sightseeing. We made it in time for the last bus of the day leaving central station. We secured a 90 minute loop and captured a glimpse of the Atomium, Rogier square, Church of Our Lady of Laeken, and National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, just to name a few sights. Interestingly, the Atomium is a 165 billion-times magnified iron crystal, it was built for the 1958 World Exhibition. It was fully renovated in 2005. I’d say it was one of the most memorable sights of Brussels.
One of the most memorable dining experiences of Brussels was the Belgian waffles. Without being too gluttonous we did have a nice dinner before dessert. Dinner took place at ‘Le Marmiton’ - a cozy, quaint eatery with a delectable menu. After our meal we wandered around seeing stall after stall of Belgium waffles. After having one bite I see why they are so world famous. That alone was worth the extra fee for our missed train to get these waffles!
So if you have a day or two to spare I’d recommend finding your way to Brussels, Belgium to have some amazing waffles.
