Vienna
by Melissa & Richard TerrisIf you have been following our adventures, then you’ll know that Melissa and I like to maximise our time when we’re travelling. This trip was no exception!
On our honeymoon in Budapest we decided to make a day trip to Vienna, given it’s relatively close proximity (about 150 miles) to Budapest. Melissa, the master organizer that she is, booked us on a coach and figured out how to make it across Budapest from our hotel to the coach pick-up point.
We got up early and had some more of the excellent breakfast in our hotel before heading out. A short journey on the tram and we arrived at the subway station. Then, after a fairly short subway ride we arrived at the coach pick-up spot.
The coach journey was great. It was a smooth drive and each seat had a selection of movies to watch. I didn’t watch a movie on the trip to Vienna, because I was being serenaded by Melissa who was enjoying singing along to one of her favorite movies - ‘Dirty Dancing’!
We arrived in Vienna in around 2.5 hours and made our way to our favorite thing - the ‘Hop on, Hop off bus’!
Our first ‘Hop off’ was at the famous Cafe Sacher to get some of that world renowned chocolate cake. It was so popular that there was a 30 minute wait on-line outside, but I have to say it was definitely worth it!
After that amazing cake, we took a walk in the sunshine and found our way to the Vienna House of Music; As a musician this was a lot of fun for me, although I know the classical musician friends I have may have appreciated it a lot more than me.
The best part of the museum has to be the virtual conductor simulator, where you can conduct a virtual orchestra. My attempt at this definitely gave Melissa a good chuckle, along with everyone else waiting on line! If you’re in Vienna I definitely recommend a walk through the House of Music Museum
After the lunch and the museum we were running out of Vienna time, so ‘Hopped’ back onto the bus and did a lap of the city. Vienna has some beautiful architecture, full of history, and we would have enjoyed more time to walk around.
We were now out of time and had to jump in a taxi back to the coach, which we made in the nick of time. The coach took off about 30 seconds after we boarded!
Back in Budapest and pretty tired after a full day, we headed back to the hotel and discovered that in addition to the downstairs breakfast area, they had a rooftop restaurant. We had a quick bite to eat for dinner, before heading to our room.
We had a great time in Vienna and would recommend it for a short stay trip!
