Budapest
by Melissa & Richard TerrisI’d never been to any Eastern European country, and the first one we visited was Budapest, Hungary. It was a very special trip as it was also our honeymoon. While we wanted it to be a touristy type of vacation, we also wanted it to be special and romantic.
From the moment we landed at the airport, transportation in Budapest was a breeze, well not completely if you ask Richard, but I’d just say, please validate your ticket in the metro (something neither of us were accustomed to doing coming from New York City and Glasgow) otherwise, it can lead to an awkward underground interaction involving passports, police call threats, and belly’s! However, we’ll leave that story for another day.
We eventually made it to our hotel, the Corinthia, it was centrally located and near a lot of shops, restaurants, and sights. The staff were nice and the breakfast was very tasty. It’s always great having breakfast included in your stay and not having to start your day searching for a meal. It was buffet style and trust me we didn’t let that “all you can eat” slogan go to waste!
We were blessed enough to be gifted by our in-laws, a wonderful spa day which was beyond anything I’d ever experienced. We went to the Széchenyi Spa thermal. Széchenyi Medicinal Bath in Budapest is the largest medicinal bath in Europe and it didn’t disappoint. These outdoor baths were extremely relaxing and definitely a popular attraction among tourists and locals alike. We then enjoyed private massages. You enter a meager room that turns into a tranquil oasis that leaves you in repose and breathing easy after your 30 minute massage.
Not only were we fortunate to have spa experience gifted to us but we were also treated to one of Budapest well known restaurants, Gundel. This restaurant offered white table cloths, cloche (which are dome shaped steel plate covers, I’d never seen one in real life before), and a live mini orchestra, something neither Richard nor I were used to experiencing. The atmosphere was romantic and the menu was eclectic.
The remainder of our trip we wandered the streets, took long strolls at night and admired the beautiful gothic architecture of the country. The buildings are ancient and well preserved. If you're looking for a unique country with relaxing ambience then Budapest is the place for you.
