Iceland

by Melissa & Richard Terris

If you were to ask me about Iceland I’d say, "förum", which means “let’s go” in Icelandic. When Richard suggested that we visit the European country with the fewest number of inhabitants, I immediately said yes!

When going to Iceland you have to prepare for freezing temperatures, thermal springs, and amazing scenery. Our visit (likely Richard’s favorite and admittedly one of mine too) included a boat ride filled with anticipation and no guarantee of seeing the playful antics of whales and dolphins. Luckily for us, Richard booked the perfect day and we were able to marvel in the “blows” (when the blowhole of the whale opens) and the “flukes” (whale tails) peeking out of the ocean prior to it disappearing into the freezing waters. We also admired the playful and amusing behavior of dolphins as well.

Iceland was definitely not all freezing temperatures and glaciers (not the size of skyscrapers as expected but still breathtaking), it also included warm hot springs. We ventured out on a day trip that landed us at the blue lagoon, where we enjoyed interesting facials, and saunas.

The south coast had even more to offer with the stunning yet dramatic Reynisfjara black sand beach. This landscape looked like something that belonged in Game of Thrones (which is why it was on the show). You walk along the beach admiring the large rock structures, and the Atlantic Ocean crashing along the shore.

Another magnificent experience was the Skógafoss waterfall, which is also situated on the southern coast of Iceland. This waterfall which garnered a rainbow during our 10 (okay maybe 20 minute) photo shoot was beautiful to marvel at and appreciate nature’s talent.

Overall, our hotel, food, and the hospitality of the people of Iceland was excellent. The prices were reasonable (slightly pricey compared to New York and the United Kingdom but still reasonable). I’d say Iceland is worth a return trip someday.
