by Melissa and Richard TerrisBrooklyn has Coney Island beach, Long Island has Jones beach and what does Queens have? Rockaway Beach! As a lifelong New Yorker, I had never visited Rockaway Beach, maybe it was due to the location or maybe the $2.45 toll, either way I wish I had come before - this is a ‘must-see’ as a local or a tourist.
There are many ways to get to Rockaway beach. You can drive which is the easiest and unlike busy places like Coney Island beach, parking is not an issue. There was tons of street parking (keep in mind this was on a hot Saturday afternoon in the summer) - you wouldn't get this in Brooklyn! Another way is the train; you can take a Far Rockaway-bound A train, or the Rockaway Park-bound shuttle train. By Bus there are many options, and the Long Island Railroad offers service to the beach. Lastly, you could also take the NYC Ferry to the beach.
We decided to have brunch prior to our beach-going adventures and made reservations for Margie’s. The restaurant is located on the ground level of the Rockaway Hotel. We went for brunch and they had all the usual brunch specials like egg’s Benedict, chicken and waffles, as well as sandwiches. The location was great, it was one block from the beach, an easy distance to reach the water.
At the beach there’s a large playground for kids, equipped with swings and slides, which is nice if you need a break from the water. The whole feel of Rockaway Beach was like a small beach town that was not a part of nyc. There were little bungalows along your walk to the beach and the place had a very relaxed atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed my weekend visit and will definitely do it again.
