Rhode Island

When unable to travel internationally, domestic travel is the next best thing. Traveling across the United States of America can be both exciting and scary, but don’t let that stop you. This past weekend I decided to do a small getaway to Rhode Island. The drive took about 3.5 hours from New York, and included miles of beautiful fall foliage.

The first stop was Newport, Rhode Island, which is best known for its historic mansions. We made The Breakers mansion one of our first stops. Tickets for a self guided tour are $24. You can download an app that guides you through each room and you can see how the Vanderbilt family lived. The best part of the property was the ocean views and great lawn. If I could do it again, I’d bring a picnic basket and enjoy a nice lunch out on the lawn.

If one mansion isn’t enough for you then walk along Cliff Walk, which is a scenic 3.5 miles paved path that borders the back lawn of The Breaker and many other mansions. You can start at the 40 Steps which is a set of stairs that leads you down to the path along Easton beach. While walking you can take in that iconic picturesque New England coastline.

Next up was pumpkin picking at Escobar’s Highland Farm. This farm had more to offer than just pumpkins, it also had a tractor ride (they referred to it’s a hayride online but there was no hay to be found by my eyes) as well as a corn maze. If you have kids with you then this is a nice stop to make.

After our day in Newport, we ventured about 35 mins away to the capital of Providence. While in Providence we made it over to the educational institution which produced graduates such as Emma Watts, John Krasinski, and John F. Kennedy Jr; Brown University. The campus is located in the College Hill neighborhood. The neighborhood boasts a large collection of colonial architecture as well as the First Baptist Church in America. Steps away from the church is a beautiful waterfront that has great views.

If you’re interested in a nice and quick getaway then stop over in Rhode Island. Visit the mansions or stop into a nice restaurant and have some of the New England seafood. Please comment and let me know what you think.
