Exploring Jordan

by Melissa TerrisWhen you think of Cancun, Mexico the first thing that may come to your mind is Spring Break and beaches. While those are definitely a big part of the allure of Cancun, another fact is that it holds one of seven new world wonders, Chichen Itza.
With a flight to Cancun, being under 4 hours from New York City, why not go and see Chichen Itza, which is located in the Yucatán peninsula. A flight there is a couple of hundred dollars and there are a ton of all inclusive resorts to choose from. I went with the GR Caribe by Solaris all inclusive resort in Cancun.
The hotel was clean and nice, and it was located right on the beach. One interesting thing I noticed is that these hotels like to sell timeshares/vacation clubs, and I guess they are not allowed to sell timeshares without having both husband and wife present. So, thanks to Mr. Terris putting a ring on it, I didn’t have to deal with the pressures of listening to sales talks for a free excursion and possibility of buying into a property!
I knew I only was going to be there a few days with the main purpose of visiting Chichen Itza, so I booked a tour in advance which cost about $70 per person. The tour included the opportunity to swim in the luminous underground Cenote Hubiku (which is a natural pit, or sinkhole, resulting from the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater). As you’ll know I don’t know how to swim (I hope you’re still not judging me) but I definitely dip my toes in the water.
However, if water is not your thing, then you have the option of Casa Don Tadeo where you could have a taste of a variety of homemade Tequilas. The tour also included a buffet lunch which had many dishes. You were also given time to tour around the Valladolid and explore huts or lay around on hammocks.
After we left Valladolid, we made our way to Chichen Itza. We arrived in the early afternoon, so it wasn’t too crowded. When you get off the bus, you make your way to a line of merchants selling all types of souvenirs. It’s so hard not to be tempted to buy.
Once you make your way past all the temping baubles you are amazed by the Mayan ruins. This ancient Mayan city occupies an area of 4 square miles (10 square km) that is thought to have been a religious, military, political, and commercial centre that at its peak would have been home to 35,000 people.
The tour included a private tour of the ruins. You were given a very detailed history of the different ruins and what they may have represented. After that you are free to roam and take photographs. The area is vast and may take you a couple of hours if not more to explore but it’s worth every moment.
I definitely enjoyed my trip to Mexico, we even ventured out into the town and took the public buses which was a nice experience. We made our way to Isla Mujeres by ferry. The small island was beautiful and the beaches were pristine. If you’re looking for a quick getaway that’s cost effective then I’d recommend Mexico. The all inclusive stays make a vacation feel care free.
