by Richard & Melissa TerrisGlasgow in a day!
Weather in Glasgow, Scotland, usually involves rainfall. Even the driest months have a lot of rain. If you’re lucky you’ll have a few sunny and dry days, but even if you don’t you’ll still be able to enjoy this lovely city. Glasgow is a place I’ve visited many times and this particular trip was not any different, but this time I decided to write about what you could do in a day in Glasgow while enjoying the food and sights of the city.
Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day, therefore finding a nice place to have breakfast is a must. I would recommend ‘Wilson Street Pantry’ in the merchant city. They have a great menu with a lot of options. I’ve had the pleasure of having the ‘Eggs Benny’ and toasted scones (delicious). Richard being the Glaswegian man that he is, enjoys black pudding with fried eggs. The food here is excellent and the location is great.
Once you’re done with breakfast, making your way towards the city center with all the shops should be the next stop. Buchanan street is one the main shopping streets in Glasgow. It stretches from Sauchiehall Street to St. Enoch Square. You’ll find stores like Pandora, River Island, and John Lewis just to name a few. You can read more about Buchanan Street here. After shopping you can make your way to George Square and admire some of the great collections of monuments and statues, and the beautiful city chambers.
After all this shopping and sightseeing it’s time for afternoon tea. There are a number of locations to get great afternoon tea, however the most highly recommended would be at the Sherbrooke castle. It is located in the south side of Glasgow in Pollokshields, but if you don't want to make a trip down there, then another equally excellent location for afternoon tea would be the ‘The Willow Tearooms’ located on Sauchiehall Street. This place is Inspired by the works of Glasgow’s greatest artist and architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and you can enjoy tasty sandwiches and cakes along with a large selection of teas.
Don’t let the sweet treats end with your tea. Try to make your way to Ardnamurchan Scottish Restaurant and Bar where you’ll have the best sticky toffee pudding you’ve ever tasted. This sweet treat is one of my favorites and a must have for me during any visit to Glasgow. This restaurant was a new find for us as we were searching high and low for sticky toffee pudding which appeared to be out of season on most menus.
Next you should walk off your food by taking a stroll in Kelvingrove Park. Nearby you can visit the University of Glasgow which has great photo opportunities. The cloisters are a well known sight at the university. Lastly, continuing with our central Glasgow theme, I would recommend ‘Chaakoo Bombay Cafe’ for a wonderful Indian dinner. Anytime we are in Glasgow this is a place we always have dinner. It’s a great way to end a busy day.
I hope next time you’re in Glasgow you can get to visit at least one or two of these locations. They won’t disappoint - I promise.
